In Memory of Heather
- by Craig Stephens
As you stand above me shed no tears For though you may see me, I am not there. My eyes are the blue of a Caribbean sea. Their light the bejeweled grass of a chill autumn morn. My hair is a sun-ripened field of golden wheat Ruffled by the fingers of a chill Septembers wind. My fingers the roots of the mighty oak. Digging deep into the dark, rich soil. My arms the wide spread branches Waiting for the suns warm embrace. Longing to hold you tight. My legs are the strength to carry you Those last extra steps when it's all been too much. My smile is the moon of a clear mountain sky. My laugh the joyous song of nature's sweet chorus. Greeting dawns welcomed arrival. My breath the summer breeze caressing your cheek. Gentle spring showers are the tears that I shed. My love is the flow of a mighty river, Endless, timeless on my quest to the sea. I am the iron-clad gallop pounding the dirt. I am a soft nicker carried on the breeze, The wind swept mane on a fast-paced ride. I am here all around you, And always will be.
Heather lost her life in a fatal car accident on 30 September 1999 in which she was not at fault. Heather was only 17 years old and left behind a loving family who will miss her very much. She will never be forgotten by all of those who loved her and whose lives she touched during her brief stay here on Earth. This poem was written by her uncle in her memory and used here with his permission.
